Formaldehyde
New or newly renovated buildings usually have new furniture, new wall painting, and new tile, new laminated /parquet flooring. All these new items often emit chemicals, example formaldehyde. Formaldehyde is a common chemical found, primarily in adhesive or bonding agents for many materials found in households and offices, including carpets, upholstery, particle board, flooring products and plywood products. Formaldehyde emission lasts from a few weeks to many years. Home/building occupants are exposes to dangerous chemicals that can potentially lead to chronic health conditions. Without proper ventilation, these gases can contribute up to 60% of the air in a closed environment.
Formaldehyde is the most common indoor air pollution and is used as a binding element in plywood, particleboard, furniture, flooring and etc. Health effects of formaldehyde include eye, nose and throat irritation, wheezing and coughing, skin rash and severe allergic reactions. In long run, it may also cause cancer. Indoor air pollution exposure may be especially hazardous to young infants, older people with impaired immune system. The health effects from indoor pollutions depend on the length and level of exposure and on individual sensitivity. Singapore national environment agency recommends that the maximum level for formaldehyde emission for each household should not exceed 0.1ppm in total.
